SPX, Brooklyn Book Fest, and More!

Yikes, I've let this blog go to seed! But it's been a busy summer, and I hope you'll forgive me. I've been working on DRAMA non-stop, and I can finally see the light at the end of the work tunnel. Just gotta keep my head down, and stay hard at work! A few fun things are happening this fall, so I want to let you know about that!

-----

This coming weekend, I'll be down in Bethesda, MD for one of my favorite comic shows, Small Press Expo!

You can find me at Table F16. Look for Dave's Astronaut Academy banner, and that's where I'll be! I'll have some books and Smile T-shirts for sale, and an assortment of original art too.

-----

The following weekend, I'll be attending the Brooklyn Book Festival in downtown Brooklyn, NY.

Brooklyn Book Festival

On Sunday, September 18, I'll be participating in two events:

11:00 A.M. Comics Quick-Draw!

Three comic artists face off in this fast-paced contest. Drawing (literally!) from audience suggestions, NYT best-selling and ALA-notable book author/illustrator Raina Telgemeier (Smile), best-selling author/illustrator Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy), and rising star author/illustrator Laura Lee Gulledge (Page by Paige) will battle with pen and pad. And, everybody wins: finished art will be gifted to some of the lucky young people in attendance! Moderated by Calvin Reid, editor of Publishers Weekly Comics World. Location: YOUTH STOOP.

I'm also leading a Turn-Your-Life-Into-A-Comic workshop, but I don't have the time and place confirmed yet. I'll update this blog post when I do! Book signings will immediately follow each of my events.

-----

October 13 - 16 sees the return of the New York Comic Con. I won't have a table there, but I'm setting up a couple of signings and panels. More info when I have it!

-----

Finally this fall, I'm heading over to France, for the Quai des Bulles festival in Saint Malo, Brittany!

This is France's second-largest comic event, after Angouleme. The festival runs from October 28-30. I'll be signing with Smile's (or technically, Souriez's) French publisher, Akileos, and then heading to Paris for a few more signing events. I don't have all of the times and dates confirmed yet, but you can bet I'll be back with the details soon. If I have any readers in France, I'd love to meet you...even if I don't really speak the language!

Back to work!

Brain Burps About Books Interview!

I recently recorded a fun podcast interview with Katie Davis, the boundlessly energetic children's book author, illustrator, and host of the excellent podcast Brain Burps About Books.

LISTEN HERE!!

BBAB covers every aspect of the kidlit world. Writing, drawing, publishing, agents, fans, websites, publicity, book trailers--Dave and I became big fans this past spring as we were hunched over our drawing boards day after day. We've learned a lot from Katie, and we've become friends since then, too! If you're at all interested in the wide world of children's book publishing, you should dig through her archives and feed your head.

San Diego Comic-Con: 2011 Edition!

2011 was my eighth San Diego Comic-Con International. It will certainly go down as one of my most memorable.

First of all, we scored a room at the Marriott. What a great hotel! And it's connected to the convention center, which is really convenient if you need to run next door and grab supplies or drop stuff off, or if you just need a few quiet minutes. Also, their pool rocks.

My friends at the Flight booth were generous enough to give me a few inches of table space, so I could have a place to sell Smile. It's also just great fun to hang out with everyone there! Such a talented, funny, friendly bunch of people. Flight just produced their 8th and final volume, so it was especially nostalgic. I'm so lucky I got to be involved with this project. And, the spinoff anthology, Explorer, will debut in March from Abrams Books--Dave and I will have a 16-page story in the book!

Dave signs Astronaut Academy at the :01 booth, while Vera Brosgol and Mark Seigel look on

Scholastic threw a party in honor of the 25th anniversary of Jeff Smith's Bone, and all of the Graphix authors were featured guests at the party. Considering Jeff is one of my biggest influences as a cartoonist, it was a humbling evening! And so much fun. A great many of my friends came, and we ate and talked late into the night. I signed books, took some pictures in the Photobooth, and enjoyed introducing my publishing friends to my comics friends. Worlds collide, in the best way.

At the Bone 20th Anniversary Party! The Hilton rooftop is a great party spot.

And of course the main reason I had to be at Comic-Con this year, was because I was nominated for an Eisner Award. Let's skip over the part where I was a nervous wreck, and the part where i got sunburned that afternoon and looked a little lobster-esque, and get right to the good stuff:

I won!!!!!

My category (Best Publication for Teens) came up second in the three-hour gala, so after giving my super-nervous acceptance speech, I was able to relax and enjoy the evening. And the rest of the weekend, for that matter.

Saturday I put my award on the Flight table with my book, and had a wonderful wonderful day! So many handshakes and congratulatory hugs and people asking if they could spin the globe on the award itself.

My one panel was a great time. As promised, I announced my new book title there. Here's that post, if you missed it!

Love & Comics panelists: Jason Shiga, Sheila Keenan, Amy & Kazu Kibuishi, Dave, Raina

Saturday evening, I attended another really fun Kidlit meetup--last year's event introduced me to so many talented people, and this year was no exception. Sadly, I have no photos, but it was a blast!

I was sold out of books by mid-day Sunday, so the last few hours of the con were spent chasing down friends on the show floor, eating tacos, and buying a few small but nice things (a Gallery Nucleus t-shirt by John Klassen, and a purse hook from Debbie Huey).

The show floor, from high above...

I owe a great many thanks to everyone who voted for Smile in the Eisners. I certainly wouldn't have come this far without the support of my friends and fans, and I'm grateful for each and every one of you. It means so much to me. The more diverse the comics industry gets, the greater by far.

Till next time, San Diego!

Raina Telgemeier
I have a book title!

I had promised to announce the title of my new book during San Diego Comic-Con, and now I can finally reveal it here on my site, too. My forthcoming graphic novel will be called... Drama!

It's about middle school theater geeks, stage crew, putting on a play, love and hate and friendship, and that's all I can talk about for now. Here's some non-spoilery process art:

The final book will be 240 pages, full color, and out in the Fall of 2012. Scholastic/Graphix is publishing.

I'm currently deeply entrenched in the art duties on this book, but I'll share more news about Drama as I am able. Oh, and I need to make a little post about my amazing Comic-Con experience, too...all in good time. (Edit: here's my SDCC post! Spoiler: I won the Eisner Award!) Hope you're having a great summer!

San Diego Comic-Con!

From Wednesday, July 20 till Sunday, July 25 I will be in San Diego, CA for Comic-Con International! Here's what I'll be doing while I'm there...

All 5 Days

Flight Booth (#2235) My home base during this show will be the Flight booth, #2235. Come get a hot-off-the-presses copy of the final Flight Anthology, volume 8. While you're there, you can get a signed copy of (Eisner-nominated!) Smile or a shiny copy of Dave's Astronaut Academy. Or, just stop and say hi!

Thursday, July 21

Evening The Bone 20th Anniversary Party! As one of Jeff Smith's fellow Scholastic/Graphix authors, I'll be a guest at this awesome party. If you've got an invite, please come say hello!

Friday, July 22

2-3 PM Cartoon Art Museum Booth (#1930) I'll be sketching requests in exchange for donations to the CAM fund. They're an absolutely wonderful organization, so if you'd like a custom sketch, please consider coming by during this time!

Evening The EISNER AWARDS! Oh man, I'm nerrrrrvous.

Saturday, July 23

3:30-4:30 PM Love & Comics Panel Room 8 Who’s showing the love in comics? Comics creators extraordinaire Jason Shiga (Meanwhile; Empire State), Kazu Kibuishi (Explorer, Amulet, Copper, Flight), Amy Kim Kibuishi (Sorcerers and Secretaries), Raina Telgemeier (Explorer, Smile, The Baby-Sitters Club), and Dave Roman (Explorer, Astronaut Academy, Agnes Quill) talk about how their love of comics plays out in the game of life, about how the collaborative process works, and about their most important pictures from the heart. (I'm going to announce the title of my new book at this panel, so BE THERE if you want to hear about it!!)

Beyond all that...who knows. I might be eating tacos at Tin Fish. Or wandering the looping walkways of the Seaport Village. Or, quite possibly, in the pool at my hotel...all I know is that I love Comic-Con, I love this town, and I can't wait to be there!

A Cartoonist at the Library Conference

About a month ago, Dave and I heard that the American Library Association’s Annual Conference was offering free Artist Alley tables to cartoonists, in exchange for a piece of original artwork for their scholarship auction. 2011 has already been a busy year of touring for me, and I’m on deadline at the moment, but Dave convinced me this was too good an opportunity to pass up. So, we put in our table application, booked a hotel and flights, and headed down to this year’s host city, New Orleans. Even though I attended ALA for an afternoon last year when it was in Washington, DC, we still had no idea what to expect. Artist Alley was a new concept for ALA. Would people buy books? Would they simply want freebies? How many people would we talk to? How would it compare to the comic conventions we usually exhibit at? Would we be off in a forgotten corner, wishing we were closer to the action?

The calm before the storm

ALA’s show floor opened on Friday and, similar to Comic-Con’s Preview Night, it was only open for a few hours. We set up our table in the Graphic Novels Pavilion and resolved a communication issue involving not having any chairs. Besides Dave and myself, there was Ryan Sias, Rod Espinosa, David Hutchison, Darren Gendron, Ben Hatke, Dan Santat, Alexis Fajardo, Jim Ottaviani, Eric Wight, Carla Speed McNeil, and Chris Schweizer. Not everyone attended the entire show and a few people failed to show up altogether, so there was always an empty table or two. By the second day, I repositioned my Smile banner so that it could be seen from the center aisle of the hall, as well as from anywhere in the GN Pavilion.

Drawing on the Graphic Novel Pavilion stage

The GN Pavilion itself had a nice, centralized location on the show floor, and a huge banner/backdrop announcing its presence could be seen from just about anywhere. My table was right next to the pavilion’s stage. The other exhibitors in the area included BroDart, holding a $20,000 Graphic Novel Library giveaway; Top Shelf Comics; Archaia; Boom Studios; the Unshelved guys; and the CBLDF. It was good company, and small enough that we could all refer to and recommend one another to conference attendees. The only downside: our table was directly beneath a massive air conditioner, so we were freakishly cold during show hours (not the worst thing, considering how hot it was outside).

Over the course of the weekend we did fairly steady business. Smile’s name recognition really helped our sales—this was my single best show of 2011 thus far, and the best I’ve done, sales-wise, since last spring when Smile debuted. The book itself was by far my best seller at ALA, but plenty of people sprang for T-shirts or Baby-sitters Club books, too.

The most amazing thing was the outpouring of enthusiasm for Smile. Close to a hundred people came by simply to share their appreciation for the book. I heard many stories, but there were constant themes: Reluctant readers love the book. We cannot keep this book on our shelves. This book has touched a lot of kids. Many girls are drawing their own comics. Never just one girl, but rather, EVERY girl is a fan. Boys like it, too. It circulates like crazy. This book is routinely “stolen” or “lost” by the kids. Librarians wanted to simply shake my hand and tell me thank you. I never had more than 10 minutes of downtime over the course of the entire weekend. I was completely boggled by this response. I continued to be approached by people on the streets, in hotel elevators, and up until our last late night in town, telling me how much they and their patrons enjoyed Smile.

Dave’s Astronaut Academy was also popular, and even though his book has only been out for two weeks, he already has fans among the librarians who were happy to quote their favorite lines or talk about their favorite characters.

We did almost no hard-selling, and very little convincing, two things I find myself needing to do a lot at comic conventions. Librarians are already convinced. In many cases they were buying an extra copy of Smile for their library (“the first 5 copies we bought have been read to pieces”) or a personal copy, or one for a special 10-year-old girl in their life.

Monday was definitely slower than the other days, but I’m glad we stuck it out. I signed at Scholastic for an hour, and made some great last-minute connections during the final hours at our own table. The show closed at 2, and we crashed pretty hard afterward.

Raina and the fabulous Emily, at the Scholastic booth

The whole weekend was full of parties, breakfasts, and dinners. I got a chance to connect with lots of old friends, as well as make some new ones. (Shout outs to Mary Ann, Mr. Schu, Grace, Ethan, Heather, Katie, Antonio, Teenage Heather...) Dave and I snuck off on our own for beignets at least three times over the course of the weekend. In the end, we enjoyed New Orleans, and obviously a big part of that enjoyment was tied to the conference itself.

So, will we do ALA again? Absolutely. It’s in Anaheim next year, and since the show moves around, I assume it gets a higher presence of local attendees in each place who can’t necessarily travel away from home for the conference. That means fresh faces every year. My still-untitled new book should be in galleys by then, and Dave will have Teen Boat. So, we’re looking forward to it.

But what about the other cartoonists tabling in Artist Alley? We sat next to Ryan Sias, whose comics are aimed at early readers, and seemingly a better fit at ALA than they are at most comic shows. Ryan said he would have liked to sell more than he did. Ben Hatke had been placed in sort of a weird spot (behind the GN Pavilion stage) and might have benefited from being in our aisle, but still sold artwork and books. Some of our friends weren’t able to be at their tables the whole weekend, and a few were focusing on promotional giveaways rather than trying to sell books. If you’re willing to put in the time, and you’ve got a product that would go over well with children’s and teen librarians especially, I think it’s a show worth doing.

To everyone we met at ALA this year: thanks for making our experience a great one! Looking forward to seeing you again in 2012.

The Gauntlet

Whew, what a couple of weeks it has been. Things started with a bang at the Children's Choice Book Awards on May 2, where SMILE was nominated for the 5th - 6th Grade Book of the Year. I lost to Rick Riordan, but I still had a lovely time at the gala--shmoozing with authors, editors, kids, and all sorts of excellent folks.

***

Then on Thursday the 5th, I spent a very full, very thrilling day at the Scholastic headquarters celebrating the kickoff to their Read Every Day. Lead A Better Life. literacy campaign--I wrote a big post about it, including photos, here!

***

The next day, bright and early, Dave and I picked up our friends Yuko and Ananth and headed north to Toronto for the Toronto Comic Arts Festival! We had a fun ride, which has been memorialized in comic form. We got in late, and settled in for some rest before a long convention weekend.

TCAF is seriously one of the best small press comic shows anywhere, hands down. For starters, it's free to attend. The venue, the Toronto Reference Library, is sprawling and beautiful and welcoming. The convention reaches out to young attendees, creating lots of great kids programming and assuring that young fans can find comics appropriate for them. The paneling tracks are well-organized and a joy to attend. In all, TCAF is one of the best-organized, most welcoming comics events I've ever been to, and it just keeps getting better.

Highlights from the weekend included a live reading panel with Dave Roman, Colleen AF Venable and R. Sikoryak; my Turn Your Life into a Comic workshop; a Thai dinner with friends that went on for several hours; a lovely breakfast hosted by First Second; and meeting so many enthusiastic young fans! As always, I'm blown away by Canadian fans' enthusiasm and good cheer. Thanks to everyone who came to say hello!

Good times at TCAF

Dave had to leave town a little earlier than I did: on Sunday night, he flew down to Orlando, FL for the International Reading Association conference, where he was a guest! I would've liked to go with him, but I had my own events to attend...!

So Monday was spent in the car driving home, and Monday evening was spent transferring my things from one suitcase to another.

***

Tuesday I flew to Baltimore, and Wednesday I was lucky enough to spend a day talking to students at the Garrison Forest School. What an amazing campus, and what a terrific group of students, teachers, and librarians! It's always a kick to talk with kids who have read and thought about my books so deeply, and their questions surprised and delighted me. I wish I could have spent another day or two there! Thank you so much to the librarians who coordinated my visit, and to everyone for making me feel so welcome!

Signing books at GFS...one of the students had already embellished her copy

Tuesday evening found me on the train back to New York, where I was reunited with Dave and the two of us were both bursting with excited about comics, kids, teaching, travel, and the future!

I've got a few weeks free now, and am playing a riveting game of catch-up before diving back into work on my book. Starting June 1, we're right back to being busy with promotion, travel, and events, which I will post about as soon as I am able! Hope you're enjoying this lovely spring so far!

Read Every Day. Lead a Better Life.

I was thrilled when Scholastic asked me to participate in a very special literacy campaign in honor of their 90th anniversary: Read Every Day. Lead A Better Life. I was one of twelve illustrators invited to interpret the theme. Here's what I came up with:

And, I was beyond thrilled when I learned who the eleven other artists were: Normal Bridwell, creator of Clifford; Bruce Degan, illustrator of The Magic School Bus; Edwin Fotheringham, illustrator of Tony Baloney; Mary GrandPre, illustrator of Harry Potter; Barbara McClintock, author of Adele & Simon; Jon J. Muth, creator of Zen Shorts; Sean Qualls, illustrator of Dizzy; Stephen Savage, author of Where's Walrus; David Shannon, author of No, David!; and Jeff Smith, creator of Bone. I truly feel like I'm walking among giants.

All of the original artwork is being auctioned off to benefit two wonderful charities: REACH OUT AND READ, and READING IS FUNDAMENTAL. You can bid on my piece here--the winning bid will receive my original, black and white drawing (ink on Bristol board) as well as a signed, framed color lithograph. Bidding goes until June 5th!

And starting June 6th, signed posters of each piece of artwork will be for sale online. I'll put up a link when they're available! Update: You can buy a poster for only $3.95 now!

All twelve of us gathered together at Scholastic's headquarters on May 5, to unveil the art, record a webcast, and sign books. Each one of the artists is such a delight, and I felt so lucky to be able to get to know them better in such a fun setting.

I have my editor and art director extraordinaire, David Saylor, to thank for inviting me to be a part of such a wonderful event. I hope you'll consider bidding! It's for a fantastic cause!

Toronto Comic Arts Festival: 5/7-5/8

Here's a big ol' post about my upcoming trip to Toronto for the Toronto Comic Arts Festival! If you're anywhere in the southern Ontario area, you should really come to TCAF. It's free, and it's one of the most concentrated gatherings of international comics talent anywhere. I'll be at TABLE #234 on the SECOND FLOOR with my husband Dave Roman, and I'm debuting THIS:

SMILE t-shirts!! The braces are printed in shiny, glittery silver ink, and the smiley face is high-quality silkscreen on aqua American Apparel t-shirts. Here's a close-up:

I haven't decided whether to take orders over the internet yet; I'll post about that after I'm home from TCAF. But I will definitely have these babies for sale at the following conventions and events this summer: TCAF, Kids Read Comics in Michigan, and San Diego Comic-Con. Come and get a SMILE shirt, hot off the press!

Here's my schedule for TCAF:

SATURDAY

4:00pm-4:45pm Carousel for Kids R. Sikoryak hosts a cartoon slide show featuring Dave Roman, Raina Telgemeier and Colleen AF Venable where the creators will read their work with music, sound effects, and audience participation! Plus a 3D comic presentation! (With glasses, of course.)

SUNDAY

11am-12pm Free Comic Book Giveaway & Costume Contest Come dressed as your favourite comic book character! The best costumes will be selected by Raina Telgemeier (Smile), Eric Wight (Frankie Pickle) and Colleen AF Venable (Guinea Pig, Pet Shop Private Eye). And be sure to pick up some FREE COMICS, too! Limit 3 for children 12 and under. Limited quantities.

1:45pm–2:45pm Married in Comics Panelists: Kathryn and Stuart Immonen, Joe Ollman, Dave Roman and Raina Telgemeier Moderated by Robin Brenner Location: The Beeton These cartoonists are married to their work — literally! Come hear a discussion of marriage in comics, encompassing the topics of being married to another cartoonist and depicting married life on the comics page.

2:45pm-3:30pm Turn Your Life Into Comics: Autobiography Workshop The inspiration for Raina Telgemeier’s book, Smile comes from her own life as an eleven-year old girl who injures her two front teeth. Are you ready to tell your life story in comics? Get tips on how to pick ideas from your own life to create your own autobiographical comics.

Pretty much the entire rest of the weekend, you can find me at table #234 on the second floor, selling books and t-shirts and artwork, and signing stuff. Look for my SMILE banner! The organizers are usually very good about providing maps of the tables, so if you can't find me, just ask someone. Feel free to bring your own books for me to sign.

Dave will also be giving out advanced reader copies of his forthcoming kids' graphic novel,
Astronaut Academy: Zero Gravity, so if you're a kid or parent, stop by and ask us how you can get one!

I drive home Monday, then Tuesday I hit the road again for a school visit in Baltimore! The fun never ends around here. Hope to see you at one of my stops along the way!

CCBA Gala; Read Every Day; TCAF!

The next two weeks will be some of the busiest and most exciting of the year! On Monday, I'm attending the Children's Choice Book Awards, as SMILE is a nominee in the 5th-6th grade category. Voting is now closed, but I only have to wait a couple of days to find out the winner. Cross your fingers for me! I'm pretty excited to attend the gala, as it's hosted by my kidlit friend Jarrett Krosoczka, and guests include LaVar Burton, R.L. Stein, and a gaggle of literary superstars!

Thursday, I'll be at the Scholastic headquarters from morning till night in support of their Read Every Day. Lead A Better Life. literacy campaign.

I was one of twelve illustrators asked to interpret the theme, and the day's events will include a group signing at the Scholastic Store from 3:30 - 5 PM, which is open to the public, followed by the unveiling of our twelve pieces of art and the kickoff of a charity auction to benefit the literacy organizations Reach Out and Read and Reading Is Fundamental. I could not be more thrilled and honored to be a part of this campaign. To think that I could be included in a small group of illustrators including Mary GrandPre, John J. Muth, Jeff Smith, and Norman Bridwell is...well, I'm speechless!

Once the artwork has been revealed, limited-edition posters of each piece will be available through Scholastic. I'll share the link here when I have one, as well as the image itself!

The next day, I'm driving to Toronto for one of my favorite small press comic shows of the year: TCAF! You can read about my TCAF schedule of events in its own blog post, right here!

CCBA: Last Chance!

I got to do this really fun thing where I read a chapter of SMILE live, on camera...and you can watch the video right here! I roped Dave into doing voices with me, and I was encouraged to share anecdotes and stories during the reading, so I talked about movies, earrings, my parents...it's a short video (2.5 minutes) so watch and enjoy! Thanks to the kind staff from A Story Before Bed for helping me set this up.

You'll see in the link that this was done in conjunction with the Children's Choice Book Awards, which are coming up next week. There's still a few days left to vote, so if you haven't cast your vote yet, you can do so NOW! SMILE is nominated in the 5th-6th grade category. You can vote if you are:

A kid! A teacher! A librarian! A bookseller!

Kids can cast their own votes, but everyone else must vote on behalf of their students/patrons/customers. So if you work with kids, and they like SMILE, you can register their votes. You've got until April 29 (this Friday) so, go! Go! GO!
